RPL – Frequently Asked Questions

RPL is a way to recognise the skills and knowledge you’ve gained through work, study, or life experience. It checks what you already know and can do to see if you meet the requirements for a qualification or unit. Your assessor will guide you through the process and help you gather the best evidence to support your application.

Indicative fees vary depending on the qualification level and your individual experience.

Typical RPL price ranges are:

  • $3,500 (maximum) for Certificate III qualifications
  • $4,000 (maximum) for Certificate IV qualifications
  • $4,500 (maximum) for Diploma qualifications
  • $5,000 (maximum) for Advanced Diploma qualifications

Your Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) fee covers the complete process of assessing and verifying your existing skills and knowledge against the qualification requirements.

This includes:

Skills and Portfolio Assessment - A qualified assessor will review your previous work experience, knowledge, and training to determine how they align with each unit of competency in the qualification. You’ll receive one-on-one support to collect and submit quality evidence—such as work samples, references, licences, and prior qualifications—to demonstrate your current skills and knowledge.

Gap Training (if required) - If any skill or knowledge gaps are identified, we’ll outline the additional training or assessment needed to meet the national competency standards.

Issuance of Qualification - Once you have demonstrated competency in all required units, you’ll be awarded a nationally recognised qualification.

Assessor Support - You’ll receive ongoing support from your assessor throughout the RPL process, ensuring a fair, transparent, and supportive experience from start to finish.

Often, yes. RPL focuses on assessing your existing skills and knowledge rather than teaching new content. You typically pay only for the assessment and any identified gap training, not for the full delivery of the qualification.

You may be able to claim RPL fees if the qualification directly relates to your current employment or income-earning activities. Please check your eligibility with your tax adviser or the Australian Taxation Office (ATO).

Yes. A qualification awarded through the RPL process is the same nationally recognised qualification issued through formal training and assessment.

All assessments are conducted in line with the Principles of Assessment (fairness, flexibility, validity, and reliability) and the Rules of Evidence (validity, sufficiency, authenticity, and currency), ensuring every outcome is accurate, consistent, and compliant with national standards.

The RPL process timeframe depends on your experience, qualification level, and how quickly you provide evidence. Once all evidence has been reviewed and competency confirmed, your qualification is usually issued within 48 hours of final assessment.

If further evidence or gap training is required, additional time may apply.
